The Global Outlook for Light Vehicle Engines: A Strategic Review of Production & Sourcing Strategies to 2014
(2Q05)
Traditionally, production of engines for each OEM’s passenger cars and light vehicles has been closely linked to its own vehicle production locations and volumes. This pattern has been broken through mergers and acquisitions of vehicle manufacturers, as well as through rationalisation and concentration of engine production. Growth in vehicle production outside the three main global markets of North America, Western Europe and Japan has also led to significant growth in engine demand, demand previously met from manufacturers in the mature markets.

The opening up of markets and the changing economics of engine production in these markets means that, increasingly, they will become net exporters of engines, which longer term could lead to a decline in engine production in the large established markets.

The prime objective, therefore, of this joint J.D. Power and Knibb, Gormezano & Partners study was to investigate global light vehicle engine demand over the next 10 years, to establish where these engines will be produced, the impact on existing capacity and, in turn, how this will affect component sourcing. Based on in-depth analysis of demand and supply, the study identifies the critical trends and challenges facing the industry as it globalizes and the production footprint shifts eastwards. The study offers an invaluable tool for strategic planning departments in the OEMs and component manufacturers whose future is dependent upon the sector.
