Global Markets for Diesel Powered Light Vehicles to 2015: 2005 Update
(published December 05)
This recently completed study is an update of an earlier study published by J.D. Power Automotive Forecasting in 2003 entitled "Global Markets for Diesel Powered Light Vehicles to 2015". That in-depth study assessed future demand for diesel powered light vehicles around the world, focussing on the technical, strategic, regulatory and fiscal issues affecting the likely availability of, and demand for, diesel cars and light trucks in over 45 countries. It set out a clear and robust methodology for analysing the relationship between these determining issues and forecast the eventual outcome in terms of diesel share. Its results were startling, revealing that diesel is a technology that is likely to take hold in the light vehicle population well beyond its core European market.

Since the study was published, there have been major changes in emissions regulations, diesel technology as well as dramatic movements in oil prices. Demand for diesels in Europe has steadily increased and the discussion of what will happen in the US becomes ever more topical. This topicality is, in part, driven by the growth in hybrid vehicle penetration - in Europe, hybrids are in their infancy, but the subject is gaining prominence. Thus, hybrids are considered within the scope of this study, as are consumer attitudes in the US towards diesel vehicles and their use. In addition, for Europe, the largest market for diesels, we undertake a number of scenario analyses to assess their impact on future demand.

The new study reviews all the changes which have taken place since the original study was published two years ago and revises all the forecasts. With the range and extent of these changes, this update is a major study in its own right and offers an invaluable tool to companies whose business is affected by changes in alternative engines and their components and their fuel demands. The primary audience for this new updated study is not limited to just subscribers to the original study - companies interested in this sector of the automotive industry will gain enormous benefit from the updated study but can, if desired, purchase the original study.
